Septic tank

A septic tank provides primary treatment. Solids settle and the liquid effluent still needs further treatment in the ground through a drainage field. In England, it must not discharge directly to a watercourse.

Sewage treatment plant

A small sewage treatment plant treats wastewater to a higher standard. Depending on the nation, site and applicable authorisation rules, treated effluent may be discharged to ground or in some cases to surface water. It normally has mechanical components and manufacturer servicing requirements.

Cesspool

A cesspool is different: it is a sealed holding tank with no discharge outlet. Approved Document H says at least 18,000 litres for two users, increased by 6,800 litres for each additional user. Because all sewage has to be tankered away, operating cost can dominate the decision.

This is not an emptying schedule. Usable capacity, alarm level, reserve storage, actual consumption and local requirements affect when a cesspool must be emptied.

Don't choose by tank purchase price. Site works, drainage-field size, power, servicing, tanker frequency and permitting/registration can outweigh the cost of the vessel itself.
